PRESS RELEASE

Ton-up for Leek Rotary Club Swimathon.
In early November 14 teams representing local schools, community groups, scouts, air cadets, medical staff from Leek Moorlands Hospital and staff and students from Keele University, swam in this year’s Leek Rotary Club annual “Swimathon”. The event was held over two Saturdays at the Brough Park Leisure Centre. One hundred and twenty swimmers took to the water and clocked-up a total of 107 miles. This is the same distance as to travel from Leek to Middlesbrough.
The organiser of the event, club president Tim Baker, said “It was a tremendous and very enjoyable event”, offering his “congratulations to everyone who took part for their wonderful efforts”.
Each team was swimming to raise sponsorship for their chosen charity, or in some cases, such as Leek Air Cadets, helping to raise funds for a replacement minibus. Once the sponsorship money has been collected it will be enhanced by the Rotary Club and presented to charity representatives at a presentation event in the New Year.
Next year the event timing will depend on the scheduling of planned refurbishment work at Brough Park Leisure Centre.  Hopefully we are looking to hold the event a little earlier to avoid clashes with November Remembrance weekend, school half term and Bonfire Night.  Likely dates are Saturday/Sunday 20/21st October 2024.
As always, a huge thank you goes to Adam and the staff at the Leisure Centre. Without their total support we could not even consider holding the event.

Leek Rotary Club Fundraiser event raises £10,000 for the Donna Louise Trust.
As a result of its successful AutoExtravaganza event in May, the Leek Rotary Club has made a donation of £10,000 to the Stoke on Trent based, Donna Louise Trust.
The cheque was handed over to Dougie Mac Ambassador, Mike Pegg following his presentation to Rotary members on Monday 6 November at the Lake Hotel, Rudyard.
Mike Pegg described the progress made by Dougie Macc Hospice services over the fifty years since it was founded. And in particular the amalgamation in March 2021 with The Donna Louise Trust, which has expanded its scope to cover all age groups from young children to senior citizens.
In giving a vote of thanks to Mike for his presentation, Anni Hollings notes that that there are very few people in the Staffordshire Moorlands who have not been touched by the care provided by Dougie Mac to a loved one or a close relative.
The AutoExtravaganza is Leek Rotary’s flagship fundraiser. A unique blend of country fair and festival of transport, it has become a popular Moorlands fixture. Good weather over the last two years has ensure its on-going development and success.
